Sønderborg Castle, a captivating fortress founded before 1200, has transformed over the centuries into a magnificent Renaissance castle. A visit to this historical gem is not only easy to plan, but also an experience that is truly worth your while. Prepare to be immersed in the rich history of North Slesvig, from the Middle Ages to the present, with a special focus on significant events like the wars of 1848-50, 1864, 1914-18, the plebiscite, and the reunification of North Slesvig with Denmark in 1920. With extensive collections showcasing furniture, textiles, crafts, and art from the region, Sønderborg Castle offers a unique cultural journey through time.

Originally constructed as a fortress in 1170 to safeguard the nation, the castle grew in size and importance during the 13th and 14th centuries under both Danish and German rule. A notable chapter in its history occurred from 1532 to 1549 when it served as a prison for Danish King Christian II. Subsequently, under the reign of King Christian III and Queen Dorothea, the fortress underwent a transformation into a magnificent Renaissance-style castle, complete with a pioneering Protestant chapel. Over time, ownership shifted until the castle eventually became the property of the Danish crown. The castle later witnessed various roles, serving as barracks, infantry barracks, and even a dungeon during times of war. Following the reunion in 1920, the castle was sold to the Danish government.
